This July, we’re turning five — and what a journey it’s been!
When we took over Pier Point Bar & Restaurant we had no idea what lay ahead. We’d just taken on the restaurant merely weeks before a global pandemic forced the country into lockdown. It was a moment of excitement… quickly replaced by a mountain of uncertainty. After the first lockdown, we finally opened the doors to our Restaurant on 5th July 2020.
But thanks to an incredible team, loyal guests, and a lot of community spirit, we not only made it through — we’ve grown, evolved, and built something we’re truly proud of.
From Surviving to Thriving
Opening during COVID-19 was no easy feat. Like so many in hospitality, we’ve faced more than our fair share of challenges over the past five years — staffing shortages, energy price hikes, changing regulations, and the general pressures that come with running a busy seafront venue. But throughout it all, we’ve held tight to one goal: strive for excellence in everything we do.
Since day one, we’ve invested in our building, our people, and our offer. From a full refurbishment of the restaurant to upgrading kitchen facilities, we’ve taken every opportunity to raise our game — and make Pier Point a space our team is proud to work in, and our guests love to visit.
A Team to Believe In
Our journey wouldn’t be possible without our incredible team. They’ve stuck with us through the highs and lows, and their passion, commitment, and standards inspire us every single day. That’s why we’re now planning something exciting — Pier Point is on the road to becoming an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT). This means our team will have a real stake in the business and share in its success for years to come. It’s about building a future together.
Awards and Recognition
We don’t do it for the awards — but we’re so proud to have received recognition for our work. Over the past five years, we’ve earned:
Gold & Silver Awards from Food Drink Devon
Gold, Silver & Champion from Taste of the West
Finalist at the National Federation of Fish Friers Awards, including:
• 2nd in the UK for Restaurant of the Year
• Takeaway of the Year, Field to Fryer, and Young Fish Frier of the Year
Top 10 Restaurants and Top 50 Takeaways by the Fry Awards
Local wins at the Naturally Inspiring Torbay Business Awards for Business Resilience, Rising Star, and Inspirational Leader
These achievements reflect the effort we put in behind the scenes — but our biggest reward is still seeing happy guests enjoying our food, the view, and the atmosphere we’ve worked hard to create.
Giving Back
Supporting our local community has always been part of our purpose. We’re proud to raise funds for Rowcroft Hospice through events like skydives, ladies’ nights, and Santa by the Sea — and to support the Fishermen’s Mission, recognising the people behind the seafood we serve. Our invisible chips has inspired the local Dine & Donate initiative.
We’re also passionate about showcasing locally landed fish from England’s Seafood Coast and promoting our producers and the work the Fishermen’s mission do— whether through England’s Seafood Feast, National Fish & Chip Day, or our daily specials.
Celebrate With Us – £5 Fish & Chips!
To say thank you to all of you — our loyal locals, visitors, friends, and supporters — we’re running a special one-day offer on Saturday 5th July, from 12 noon to 5pm:
️ Our award-winning Lite Bite Fish & Chips for just £5
Reservations only – limited availability
It’s our way of marking the milestone and giving something back to the community that has helped shape our success.
“We know how hard people work for their money, and we never take it lightly when you choose to spend it with us. Our aim has always been to deliver real value, genuine care, and great food — every time.”
— Lorraine Arnold, Owner
Whether you’ve been with us since day one or you’ve only just discovered us, thank you. We can’t wait to see what the next five years bring — and we hope you’ll be a part of it.
With love and gratitude,
The Pier Point Team
