Pier Point Bar & Restaurant Brings Back Winter Wonderland Grotto This Christmas in Aid of Rowcroft Hospice

Pier Point Bar & Restaurant Grotto Statement

It is with great sadness that we announce the closure of our Grotto this year due to extensive damage caused by Storm Darrah. Despite our best efforts to assess all possible options, the cost of replacing the marquee and decorations has proven too significant to make the project viable.

The Grotto was established to raise vital funds for Rowcroft Hospice, a cause close to our hearts, and this has been an incredibly difficult decision to make. We are deeply grateful to everyone who supported the Grotto, including Toby’s Sheds and Bookers, whose contributions have been invaluable.

We are sincerely sorry for the disappointment this may cause to those who had been looking forward to this special experience. All bookings were managed by Rowcroft Hospice and money has been refunded.

Pier Point remains open every day, and you can still help us support Rowcroft by adding a portion of Invisible Chips to your order. Every penny from these sales goes directly to the hospice, helping them continue their incredible work.

A message from Lorraine Arnold, owner of Pier Point Bar & Restaurant:
“This decision was not made lightly. The Grotto was a labour of love for our team and Rowcroft Hospice, but the damage caused by Storm Darrah has left us no choice. We are heartbroken but remain committed to supporting Rowcroft Hospice in any way we can. Thank you to everyone who has shown us and Rowcroft so much kindness and generosity.”

We truly appreciate your understanding and continued support. Together, we can still make a difference for Rowcroft Hospice.

Multi award winning Pier Point Bar & Restaurant is thrilled to announce the return of its much-loved Winter Wonderland Grotto this Christmas season. Starting from the 29th November, the Grotto will once again delight families, with all profits going directly to support local charity, Rowcroft Hospice. This festive event coincides with the Bay of Lights Torquay Illumination Trail, offering a truly magical Christmas experience that visitors can enjoy alongside the enchanting walk through the illuminated bay. You could also coincide with a trip to the panto!

Lorraine Arnold, owner of Pier Point Bar & Restaurant, shared her excitement: “Christmas is a time of joy and giving, and we’re delighted to bring back our Winter Wonderland Grotto to create magical memories for families while supporting a cause close to our hearts. Rowcroft Hospice does incredible work in our community, and we’re proud to contribute to their mission through this event.”

Alison Upton from Rowcroft Hospice also expressed her appreciation: “We are incredibly grateful to Lorraine and the team at Pier Point for their continued support. The funds raised from the Winter Wonderland Grotto will make a significant difference in helping us provide care and support to those in our community who need it most during the festive season.”

Children visiting Santa will be welcomed by cheerful elves before meeting Santa himself and receiving a gift of their choice from a wide selection. The festive experience continues with a Christmas activity sheet, a warming hot chocolate, and a delicious cookie at Pier Point afterwards—all for just £16 per child.

Bookings for the Winter Wonderland Grotto are now live. Families are encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment.

About Rowcroft Hospice: About Rowcroft Hospice

It takes time, compassion, medical expertise and money to help patients with life-limiting illnesses and their loved ones to make the most of every day, but every year Rowcroft Hospice helps around 2,500 people in South Devon to do just that.

By providing comfort, support and specialist services, the hospice enables families to share precious and joyful moments when they are needed most – whether it’s a beautiful wedding, remarkable reunion, simple thank you or gentle cuddle.

From Dartmouth to Dawlish and up onto Dartmoor, Rowcroft cares for 80% of its patients in their own homes with a team of community nurse specialists, social workers, and bereavement volunteers. The team also provides occupational therapy, physiotherapy, complementary therapy, spiritual care and music therapy, delivering a holistic approach tailored to individual needs.

Day and night, Rowcroft’s award-winning Hospice at Home team provide free specialist support to patients at home in their last few of weeks of life. The team helps to monitor and manage symptoms to enable patients to be comfortable and also offers support for loved ones, enabling carers to take much needed breaks. The service includes a dedicated telephone support line 24 hrs a day.

In Rowcroft’s 12-bedded Inpatient Unit in Torquay, the hospice’s team provides specialist care for patients whose complex needs cannot be met at home. Along with high quality health and social care, we also offer delicious homecooked meals and access to our beautiful gardens. The welcoming and homely environment helps patients and families to make the most of precious time together.

Rowcroft is an independent charity with around 75% of its funding derived from the incredible generosity of local people. The hospice team fully acknowledges the current challenging economic climate and is grateful for the local community’s continued support through these tough times; every pound raised makes a real difference.

With an increasingly ageing local population, the demand for Rowcroft’s care has never been greater. The charity currently cares for around one in three people with life-limiting illnesses across South Devon and has ambitious plans to expand its care to reach more people.
